Summer Safety Tips

While the summer months might be winding down a bit, we are nowhere close to saying goodbye to our Midwest heat and humidity. The rising temperatures and sticky humidity do more than make us run for the air conditioning. Your dog is also subject to the weather and can suffer from heat related conditions. To best keep your furry companion safe in the heat, check out a few of our favorite tips.

Shorter Walks
Exercise is exceedingly important for your dog, but hot conditions can have serious consequences. Opt for keeping your walks, but take a shorter route.

Cooler Conditions
When walking or exercising your dog, consider heading out when the sun isn’t too strong. Try the early morning or dusk to get cooler conditions for your outdoor time.

Lots of Water
Your dog might be man’s best friend, but you need to be sure that water is his best pal during these hot months. Keep your dog’s water bowl full and take water with you for him if you are going to be on the road, or on a walk, for more than 30 minutes. If your dog isn’t interested in water, try offering ice cubes to increase his fluid intake. Don’t forget that water doesn’t just have to be for drinking. Your dog may love a run through your hose, sprinkler, or local creek as well.

A Cool Spot
You may have already noticed that your dog has a preferred place to relax when the temperature rises. Some dogs head to a tile floor while others opt for lying directly on the air conditioning vent. Be sure that your dog has a nice, cool spot to take it easy for a bit.

Combat Cabin Fever
If you are taking shorter walks due to high temperatures, your dog may need a little extra indoor exercise than usual. Hide a favorite treat and send him on a sniffing scavenger hunt or let him chase the kids around a bit. Even better, use you extra time indoors to brush up on and practice your Dog Training Now commands.

Stay safe out there and remember to keep your dog cool this summer!
